Early Morning Activities
“Early morning activities”, for our purposes, is anything that happens before 10am. like those in the evening, are mostly offered by you and your fellow choro campers. These can be entirely informal and unscheduled — like, you invite someone to play a few tunes with you. If you’d like to lead a yoga or tai-chi class, host a crossword-puzzle meet-up — whatevah — just let me know and folks will see it here. These can be as early as you like.
Here’s what we have scheduled so far, all starting at 9am:

Morning Warm-up on Core Repertoire
This will be camper-led if it is to happen. Not a lesson … just someone holding the space, setting the tempo, etc. If you’d like to serve your fellow choro campers in that way one morning, please let me (Andrew) know by email. You’ll see your name in lights here:
- Tuesday – Polca (Paciente / Coralina)
- Wednesday – Choro (Velhos chorões / Acerta o passo) – Led by David Celimsky
- Thursday – Maxixe (Machucando / Diplomata)
- Friday – Samba (Amoroso / O boêmio)
- Saturday – Carícia (choro) ; Teu beijo (samba) – Led by Jean Garcia-Gathright
There will be two teacher-led early morning activities, both of which fall also under the “Special Topics” category. These are the offerings by Fabio and Clarice you see below.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Fabio Oliveira is back this year to lead a Roda de Samba Special Topic at 4 PM on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. As a supplement to that, he’s going to offer a morning vocal class on the day’s samba tunes so we can sing as well as play them. All are welcome, whether you plan to attend the samba class later in the day or not.

This class is intended for players of other instruments who would like to learn the basics of playing pandeiro. Especially here in North America you are likely to encounter many an occasion that calls for a pinch pandeiro player. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to step into that role? Join Clarice for any or all of these morning sessions to literally try your hand at this iconic Brazilian instrument so central to choro and other genres of Brazilian music.
