André Boxexa

“Boxexa”, as he is known,  holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from UNIRIO. He has been a timpanist with the National Symphony Orchestra-UFF since 1998. As a drummer, he has been part of numerous formations conducted by Wagner Tiso, in groups and orchestras throughout the country, accompanying the greatest artists of Brazilian popular music at awards ceremonies of all kinds.

He was also part of Bibi Ferreira’s groups and orchestras between 1994 and 2002, in addition to touring and recording with pianist Lilian Barretto and ballerina Ana Botafogo. He worked as a percussionist at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro between 1996 and 2002 and has performed as an extra musician, as well as in trios and solo groups, with all the symphony orchestras in Rio de Janeiro, including the MPB & Jazz series with Água, OPES, and Gal Costa. He also performed Radamés Gnattali’s ‘Concerto Carioca No. 2’ and participated with OSBA, Camerata Curitiba, Blumenau, etc. He also participated in the Brazilian String Orchestra and the Brazilian Music Orchestra.

From 1992 to 2021, he was a professor at the Villa-Lobos School of Music, where he studied with Edgard Nunes Rocca (“Bituca”) and Eliseu Moreira Costa between 1986 and 1994. He teaches in the educational programs of OSN-UFF, in Choro workshops and Master Classes, and at festivals and panels throughout Brazil and France (Funarte, Ibiapaba, Londrina, Cuiabá, Toulouse…). He is very active in theater musicals, from Marlene and Sérgio Brito to countless other productions with Marco Nanini, Diogo Vilella, Zezé Polessa, and Miguel Falabella. He performs in recordings for film, radio, and TV (Tim Rescala, Josimar Carneiro, Walter Lima Jr., Milton Nascimento, etc.) and phonographic productions.

He has recently participated as a guest with Terno Carioca and the Marcílio Figueiró Trio.
