Bandolinista. Bachelor’s degree in Composition and PhD in Musicology from UNIRIO. Marcílio’s doctoral thesis deals with the influence of sung music on the consolidation of Jacob do Bandolim’s musical style.
Member of several instrumental groups such as Água de Moringa – with six CDs released – and also Bandolinata (an mandolin quartet) and Caldereta Carioca, having also worked in a duo with the late guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima.
Marcílio also has extensive experience in the studio and in concerts with big names in Brazilian popular music, such as Nana Caymmi, Gal Costa, Simone, Zeca Pagodinho, Dudu Nobre, Moacyr Luz, Walter Alfaiate, Fundo de Quintal, João Bosco, Nelson Sargento, Marcos Sacramento, Mariana Baltar, Nei Lopes, Juliana Amaral, etc.
In addition to Água de Moringa, he has recorded arrangements for Camerata Gama Filho, Quinteto Villa-Lobos, Orquestra Flor do Sereno, Duo Verani-Alcofra, Terno Carioca, Mariana Baltar, and Orquestra Furiosa Portátil.
Together with the team at the Moreira Salles Institute, he worked on the editions “Pixinguinha na pauta,” “O Carnaval de Pixinguinha,” “Pixinguinha: outras pautas,” among others. He worked with the Jacob do Bandolim Institute as editor and proofreader of the albums “Tocando com Jacob” and “Caderno de Partituras de Jacob do Bandolim.”
Marcílio is the editor and reviewer of the editions of Sambabook dedicated to João Nogueira, Martinho da Vila, Zeca Pagodinho, Dona Ivone Lara, Jorge Aragão, and Beth Carvalho.
In partnership with researcher Felipe Ábido, he edited the collection “Reminiscências Musicais – Juventino Maciel – vol 1” (2018), containing 70 compositions by the Rio de Janeiro bandolinist, revered by Jacob do Bandolim. He released the manual Harmonia ao Bandolim (Harmony on the Mandolin) through the publisher Irmãos Vitale, the result of a long observation of the procedures of classical harmony and the functional approach to popular practice on the instrument.
Like several of our guest artists this year, Marcilío teaches and promotes choro at the Escola Portátil de Música and Casa do Choro.
