Choro Styles

Hi! Is there a comprehensive list that includes the style a choro song would be played in? Just looking for a way to make sure I’m playing the correct percussion parts, and/or the correct comping patterns. If not, would any experienced chorões be willing to start a list, at least of the more commonly played songs? Thank you!

Hi angiet!

There's no such comprehensive list, but in many places -- for example in the Choro Songbooks, other collections, or in the Casa do Choro archives  -- there's a recommended rhythm for any tune that's included. That said, some tunes are played differently by different artists -- what was originally a polca may become a maxixe, a choro becomes a samba, etc. So your best guide when you are interested in a new tune is to listen to a variety of recordings of it (youtube is great for this) and choose the approach that seems most common, or that you like best.

I also think this forum could be a great place to check in with others if you are having trouble deciding how to approach a specific tune.

I hope that helps, and welcome to the Choro Forum!
