Hi all - here's a link to a Google Sheets document I've started for the Choro Camp New England 2025 repertory that people might find helpful....
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gXZuWKqiSTrvEx2LaUSrvIBVdp3Gdw7iDf5VpVrauzY/edit?usp=sharing
As a format, my Brazilian teachers fellow musicians like it as a way of better understanding each composition. It's a combination of a lead sheet broken down into lines, an outline of compositional structure, and Roman numeral analysis, along with key / bpm.
The idea is basically to see the formalism of the choro form, which at least for me makes it easier to learn. (You can see easily, for example, that line 3 is the same as line 1.)
Using it, I can
- see parallels between lines/phrases, subsections, and sections
- see the structure of harmonic development within a section
- better understand the harmonic structure
It's not a substitute for the sheet music or the music itself - it's just a helpful study aid (for me at least), making it easier to practice and learn repertoire.
Also, as no one has checked this, I don't guarantee it's 100% correct ! And the analysis in particular should be vigorously criticized and scoffed at !
Suggestions and improvements and additions are welcome !
Tim
