To get the most of my study of "Ao velho pedro", I've been studying the original recording from Paulo Mouro's 1986 album, 'Gafieira etc e tal'. As is sometimes the case, the cavaquinho kicks the tune off, which allows you to hear more clearly the levadas being used. The cavaquinista on this recording (according to Discogs) is someone name Aranha -- someone I'd like to learn more about.
I loaded the tune into Audacity, selected just the 1st 4 bars and slowed it down by 40%. Here's a clip of that:
