I run a roda / choro study group in Durham, NC called the Shoebox Choro Roda! We meet on the second Tuesday of each month, and it's open to everyone. Here's how it works...

  1. Each month, I send out sheet music for 2-3 choro standards, plus historical/cultural/translation notes and links to a variety of recordings.
  2. Musicians have a few weeks to learn and practice the month’s repertoire on their own. (Of course, you're also free to just show up and sightread if you want!)
  3. At the roda, we start by playing the month's new tunes, then transition into a more typical roda where people call whatever choros they want.

We're coming up on month 5 and I'm happy to say we've had consistently great turnout. If you're a local or you're planning a visit to NC, free to message me and I'll send you the jam info and mailing list link. We'd love to have you!

Professional choro performers who are planning 2025 tour stops in NC (Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill...) should also feel free to message me: we can pay you to run a choro workshop or lead one of our monthly rodas while you're in town πŸ™‚

What you're doing in Durham looks great, Julia! This kind of local organizing, more than anything else, is what will help folks get into playing choro in North America. Two thumbs up!!

@admin Thank you so much Andrew! This is my first time EVER running a group like this and it's been incredibly rewarding so far. πŸ™‚
